Castle Garden Battery, New York

The view shown on this platter is Castle Garden Battery  which  was taken from a drawings by John Warner Barber and published in the "Historical Collections of  the  State  of New York. Battery Park  was located at the southern end of Manhattan. The view shows several people enjoying a walk on the esplanade and a foot bridge extending  200 feet to a building known as the Battery. The platter has a Shell Border and a Circular Center. The Platter is 18 1/2" long and 14 1/2" wide. The Platter has the impressed mark "wood" and a stamp mark showing a eagle. The Platter has been restored

    A View of the City of Baltimore 

This Drainer depicts a View of  Baltimore from the Harbor.  This sketch shows two flagstaffs rising from a small wharf in the foreground, from which banners float, one of them displaying an anchor and the other the letter B.  The waterfront of the City may be seen with rows of regular buildings lining the streets and here and there a church spire.  Lafayette considered Baltimore one of  the most handsome cities in the Union.  The Drainer is 12 1/4 " long and 9" wide.  condition is excellent.  Thomas Godwin, England, 1840.

          Cadmus (so called)  Plate

 The Cadmus was the sailing vessel in which Lafayette  returned to America on August 15, 1824. The ship was placed at the disposal of Lafayette and his party were the only passengers.  The  plate has a Trefoil border and is in excellent condition.           Hoboken In New Jersey Plate

 This Plate depicts the mansion built by Colonel Stevens in Hoboken.  It was considered to be one of the handsomest   homes in America.  The illustration portrays a large Colonial house set in a  spacious lawn, shaded with tall pine trees. The Plate measures 7 3/4"  in diameter and has a Spread Eagle Border.  Maker is Joseph Stubbs, c. 1822-1835.  Condition is mint

Fall of Montmorenci Near Quebec Plate

This plate depicts the Fall of Montmorenci near Quebec which was a picture published in 1831 by P..& W. Ruthven and described as the "most magnificent object of the Province".  The stream of water is about twenty-five yards wide and flowed over an almost perpendicular cliff into a basin some eighty feet below.  The present Fall is unchanged from that of earlier days.  The plate is  9" in diameter and has a shell border.  Color is a deep blue and transfer is crisp. Pittsfield Elm Plate

 This plate depicts a winter view in Pittsfield Mass. The center view is the Congregational Church which was erected in 1792 and was known as the Bullfinch Meeting House of Pittsfield. The famous Elm was reputed to be 340 years old when it was cut down in 1861. It was surrounded by a fence in 1820. The border is large flowers and medallions of the Center View. The plate is 7 3/4" in diameter and condition is mint. Clews, c1820-1836

 This plate is entitled "Fair Mount Near Philadelphia" It depicts the grounds around the Water Works on the Schuylkill River. Trees and buildings are in the background and a man and woman are in the foreground. Border is Spread Eagles amid flowers and scrolls. The plate is 10 1/4" in diameter. Alms House, New York Platter

This Platter is one of the Beauties of America Series and depicts the Alms House located in New York City.  This was the third Alms House built in New York City and the cornerstone was    laid in 1811.  In 1848 it was rebuilt and became   part of Bellevue Hospital.  The platter is 16 1/2" x 12 1/2"  and the color is brilliant blue.  There is a professional repair to a small hairline on the reverse side  John & William Ridgway, 1814-1830

  This Liverpool Pitcher depicts Peace, Plenty and Independence on one side.  On the other side is a Washington Monument, encircled by the names of the thirteen states.  The Masonic Symbol is above the picture of Washington.  On the left side is imprinted, " First in War, First in Peace"..   On the right side is imprinted " First in Fame".  Beneath the spout is an Eagle with thirteen stars above and E Pluribus Unum below. The Pitcher is 10 inches High.  England 1820-1830.

       Dr. Syntax Disputing His Bill 

This Plate depicts Dr. Syntax, after spending the night at the inn,  becoming angry at the amount of his bill, and is seen presenting a large scroll to the Landlady. The Landlady becomes very argumentative. The border is made up of flowers and scrolls. This plate is one of a series of 32 plates pertaining to  the various tours of Dr. Syntax. This Plate depicts Dr. Syntax standing before a nearly completed portrait of  a Lady.   In the center the enormous body of Lady Bounty covers up her huge chair.  A small girl stands at her knee and a maid watches at the right.  A butler is coming in at the extreme left.     There are three different scenes depicted on this Cup & Saucer Set.  The saucer shows the Court House, Boston while the Cup depicts Columbia College, New York on one side and the Octagon Church, Boston on the other side. This plate depicts the Marine Hospital in Louisville KY. The building was an substantial stone structure and was used  as a home for sailors of the lakes and inland water ways. 5034           City Hotel New York

This  plate depicts a building which, at the time was  the most famous American inn.   The inn was constructed in 1792 on Broadway near Wall St. The City Hotel provided 78 room on five floors. The hotel was New York's best known inn until the Astor House was built in 1832.  General Lafayette made the City Hotel his home on his visit to the City.  The plate is 81/2" in diameter and is  in mint condition. This  plate depicts the famous Trenton Falls flowing through a ravine four miles long in Western Canada and dropping 312 feet in a course of two miles.  In early days, a journey of two or three hours by horse and carriage was required to reach this locality from Utica.  There are evergreens back of the cliffs and there are three people on top of the ledge. Fort Miller On The Hudson River

This plate depicts the village of Fort Miller which was 37 miles north of Albany and 13  miles south of Sandy Hook.  The falls eight feet high are nearby.  Major Putnam, in the Revolutionary War, saved himself and his men  from  the Indians by taking his boat over the falls.  Right and canter the Hudson , with deeply indented banks, extends directly back through the canter and disappears through the center and disappears at the left.  The houses in the background indicate the little village of Fort Miller.  This plate is part of the Picturesque Views Series by Clews.  c. 1829-36
